Principal's Message

k
Dear Parents and Guardians,

As we begin planning for the 2026–27 school year, our teachers thoughtfully and carefully design well-balanced classrooms where all students can thrive. Our goal is to create learning environments that support academic growth, encourage new friendships, and promote positive collaboration. We also work to ensure classrooms are balanced in terms of gender, learning styles, and social dynamics, while recognizing that staffing assignments may change.

Because many factors are involved in the placement process, we are unable to accommodate requests for specific teachers. Granting individual requests would require us to do so for all families, which is not feasible.

We greatly value your insight about your child. If there are specific social or learning considerations that would help us make the most appropriate placement, we welcome your input. For example, information about peer dynamics—such as conflicts outside of school—can be helpful to our team.

If you would like to share input, please email Peggy Gross at pgross@portlandct.us by April 25. Please note that placement letters from previous years will not be reviewed, so we encourage you to submit updated information if needed.

Unfortunately, we are not able to accept submissions after the deadline.

We truly appreciate your partnership in helping us place each child in an environment where they can succeed. While final placement decisions are made with careful consideration by our team, your perspective is important and appreciated.

Thank you for your continued support—we look forward to another successful school year!

Sincerely,
Ryan Walstrom

Attendance & Transportation Updates

Please make sure to email vvattendance@portlandct.us if your child will be absent or if there is a change of dismissal/transportation plans. Please do NOT send messages directly through ParentSquare to the office. The email should include your child’s first and last name, name of teacher, reason for absence, and the date or dates of absence. Please make sure the email is sent the night before or the morning of the absence to ensure the office staff, nurse and teacher are aware. Please make sure the office is aware of all transportation updates regarding your child.

Bus Information

Busing in the Portland Public Schools is provided by M&J Bus. Bus route lists are posted here: https://www.portlandctschools.org/transportation. The bus lists identify each stop's pick-up/drop-off time and location.

On a typical day, when all drivers are present and there are no abnormal road conditions, we expect that the routes will pick up and drop off students at times identified on the bus lists, give or take ten minutes.

If parents/guardians need real-time information about the whereabouts of a bus, please call M&J Bus at (860) 342-2217. The dispatcher at M&J Bus has real-time access via radio to all bus drivers.

Nurse's News

Happy Friday!

As we head into April break, I want to thank you for helping us keep Valley View healthy! We appreciate your caution when it comes to navigating “should I send my child to school”.    I hope that as the weather warms up we will see an even bigger decline in respiratory and GI related illnesses.  Please remember that we have a 24-hour policy to keep your child home if they have a fever or have had GI symptoms like vomiting or diarrhea. I am always available if you are not sure about sending your child to school.

I hope you and your family enjoy the break whether you get to head somewhere very warm or just plan to relax at home and enjoy some down time, I hope it is restful.
 Have a wonderful week!

After break, we will begin working on research projects during library classes. This week, we reviewed fiction and nonfiction to get prepared to do our research.

Our next book club for May and June birthdays will be April 22nd. I sent an email to everyone who signed up for it, but if you want your child to participate and didn’t receive an email, let me know.

We have 45 overdue library books! Please return your books as soon as possible.

Thanks everyone for your support of the Valley View Library!
